Appeal from Cyclists on Independence Day

14 Aug 2011

On Independence Day, Ride a Cycle foundation is gifting a bicycle to the prime minister and organizing a Bicycle ride.

DATE /TIME : Aug 15th, 11:00AM.

VENUE : PRESS CLUB OF BANGALORE, CUBBON PARK BANGALORE

We will appeal for inclusion of new fundamental rights in the constitution:

1>  Right to Breath Clean Air as a FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT for all Indian citizens.

2>  Right to walk freely and fearlessly as a FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT.

3>  Right to Bicycle as a FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT to be included.

Cyclists are invited to write personal messages on a banner which will be sent to the Prime Minister, along with the cycle.

Years ago, India achieved independence due to the sacrifice of men like Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagath Singh and Mahatma Gandhi. These men wanted us to live happily and freely.

Today we have lost the freedom to walk and bicycle in Independent India due to the excessive invasion of Automobile Culture and failure of the successive governments to enable sustainable mode of transport.

Bicycle is neglected as it is being used by the poorer section of the people. Bicycling is being seen as undignified conduct.

Car Based Culture have taken away our freedom to breathe, freedom to walk on the streets. Car Based culture with its in-built violence kills 1000 young people and maims 10,000 people annually.  It creates a fear psychosis and immense mental stress to the rider and the environment around the rider. This culture has made our society become sick with India being the diabetes capital of the world.

But Bicycle Freedom is severly restricted in Indian Cities and the freedom of high speed reckless automobiles is enabled by widening roads, signal free junctions, magic boxes etc.

Bicycle provides us Freedom from Congestion, Freedom from Noise and Air Pollution , Freedom from Fuel Dependence thereby saving countries millions of rupees.

We need to struggle again to regain the freedom of this living space called India, so that we can walk and bicycle freely. This will also enable us to see and reflect where our future is being headed if we follow this path.

Ride A Cycle Foundation would be organizing a “Give us also little freedom” bicycle ride and would submit a memorandum to the Governor to change the mobility culture from a economically and environmentally unsustainable , highly intolerant, violent, brutal, terrorizing, noisy, inequitable form  into a non violent, equitable, economical, environmental friendly mobility based on non motorized transport and efficient public transport.

To remind the Government of its obligations to create a sustainable and clean environment in Urban Spaces Ride a Cycle Foundation would be gifting a BICYCLE to the following dignitaries.

1> Sri Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India

2> Sri Pranab Mukherjee, Finance Minister of India.

3> Sri Sadanand Gowda, Chief Minister of Karnataka.

RideACycle Foundation

11 Nov 2008

The RideACycle Foundation wants to encourage cycling – as a form of recreation, sport and as a means to commute to work. One day it hopes to design fundraisers through cycling for a variety of charities.

The RideACycle Foundation will lobby for the rights of cyclists and for laws that offer protection to cyclists through dedicated cycling lanes as well as through support for safety regulations. We hope to work with the government administration to bring about change aimed at encouraging cycling in our cities.

Amongst the activities the foundation plans to undertake are several fun events like a cycle treasure hunt, off road rides for children, dirt track races, and bicycle maintenance workshops.

However, one of the first campaigns that the RideACycle Foundation will undertake is promoting responsible and safe behaviour within the cycling community.
